Compounds of Three Words
© 2026 Mark Isaak

Compounds composed of two words are widespread, everyday commonplaces. Those formed of three words are far less common. Here is a list of those I have found. Where the etymology is not trivial, a sketch of it is given in brackets. There are surely more triple (or more) compounds, which I will add as I find them.

aircraftman
albeit   [although it be]
forevermore
handicraftsman   [hand-craft man]
heretofore   [here to foran (in front)]
howbeit
howsoever
  whatsoever
  whencesoever
  whensoever
  wheresoever
  whichsoever
  whithersoever
  whomsoever
  whosesoever
  whosoever
inasmuch
insofar
longshoreman   [along-shore man]
nevertheless
  nonetheless
newspaperman
notwithstanding
outdoorsman
plainclothesman
upperclassman
  underclassman
wannabe   [want to be]
whodunit   [who done it]
  whydunit

Note that several of those (e.g., longshoreman, notwithstanding) were formed when one word was joined to another word which was already a compound. If we allow compounds formed thus, we should note that "woman" originated as a compound, back before "man" had aquired its male specificity and just meant "person". "Woman" derives from "wiman", which derives from "wifman", which is a compund meaning literally "woman person". If "woman" is allowed as a compound, then there are innumerable triple compounds formed by adding one more word, e.g.

businesswoman
charwoman   [chore woman-man]

And at least two that could be considered four-word compounds:

handicraftswoman
newspaperwoman
